Draft Survey

SGNCO offers draft survey service that determines the accurate weight of commodities. Draft survey is highly beneficial prior to the loading or discharging of commodities from vessels. SGNCO has trained draft surveyors across the globe, who work as per the defined draft survey protocol. We provide draft survey for the following commodities:
  • Building materials & aggregates
  • Energy minerals
  • Fertilizers and dry chemicals
  • Industrial minerals
  • Non ferrous metals and minerals
  • Steel
  • Steel making raw materials
The weight is calculated by measuring the displacement of water, which is based on Archimedes Principle. Reading of initial displacement in water level due to the vessel is recorded prior to its loading or discharging. Afterwards, reading of final displacement in water level is taken after the completion of discharging or loading respectively. Afterwards, raw data and final result are extensively reviewed before handling it over to the clients.

SGNCO's experts take several factors into account before weighing any cargo, which can affect draft readings. The key factors are:
  • Density of the of the sea or river
  • Changes in the quantity of ballast during draft readings
  • Changes in the consumables such as fuel oil, potable water etc.
  • Trim and deformation corrections.
It takes extensive expertise of highly qualified surveyors to measure accurate weight as several factors come into play while determining the weight through draft survey. The main factors that affect the accuracy of draft survey are:
  • Sea conditions at the time of loading or discharging
  • Weight of the cargo loaded with respect to the entire capacity of the vessel.
